Today, I was drinking a cup of coffee after my lunch in my office’s pantry. The quality of coffee was supposedly to be quite good. It was brought from the coffee shop where they were made using the “big coffee sock” to bring out their fragrance. In the comfort of the air-conditioned environment, without schoolwork and ORD date bothering me, I tried to enjoy the cup of coffee alone. After having a few sips of the coffee, sad to say it was not fantastic but it reminded me of the days in my NS unit.

Every Tuesdays and Fridays, I used to chill in the office after a run earlier in the morning. A cool shower after a run is always refreshing and with it, I would pray quietly that there would be no work during those mornings, so that I can enjoy my breakfast in peace. My breakfasts were simple. They consisted of just three pieces of Kong Guan crackers and a cup of Nescafe 3-in-1 coffee from the commanders’ mess, which I had to bring my own styrofoam cup to collect it. Well, the mess boy provided the coffee pack and hot water out of his kindness since I was not even entitled to them, as they were from the “commanders’” mess. The days at that unit were certainly not happy ones. With all my friends still on Pulau Tekong, I did feel misplaced and lost.

However, during those days, the coffee was great. Sitting in the office, having the aroma of the coffee filling up the room, I felt relaxed. I was able to seek solace in a cup of coffee. The aroma of a cup of coffee.

It makes you see the beauty of the simple things in life.
